Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem elects 49th Grand Master

The ancient and noble “Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem (OSLJ)”, a charitable and oecumenical Order of Chivalry, founded A.D. 1099 in Jerusalem out of a hospitaller brotherhood, caring for Knights suffering from leprosy, gathered from 12.9. - 14.9.2008 in Manchester to elect the 49th Grand Master of the Order.

 

 

Delegates from 40 jurisdictions from all over the world, representing both Maltaand Paris Obediences resp. ca. 4.000 members, elected on this Chapter General together the  49th Grand Master to again unify all Knights and Dames of St. Lazarus under the leadership of one Grand Master.

 

 

With overhelming majority H.E. Don Carlos Gereda y Borbón, Marquis de Almazán, had been elected as 49th Grand Master, in succesion of the first Grand Master Gerard Tenque (1099), Thomas of Sainville (1277-1312) or Francois de Bourbon et Bourbon (1952-1967).

 

 

The festive inthronisation of the new Grand Master was celebrated in the Anglican Cathedral of Manchester by H.B. Patriarch GREGORIUS III Laham of the Greek-Catholic-MelkiteChurch, the Spiritual Protector of the Order, and the entire Grand Magistral Council of the Order. H.E. Grand Commander Major David James and H.E. Grand Prior of England and Wales The Rt. Hon. The Earl Ferrers PC had signed the unification document, what marked the end of a period of two administrations of the Order.

 

 

The Gala-Dinner was attended by 150 guests as Officers of the Order and Heads of Jurisdictions, among others H.E. 49th Grand Master Don Carlos Gereda y Borbón, Marquis de Almazán, Grand Master Emeritus H.R.H. Prince Don Francisco de Borbón y Escasany Duke of Seville, the Spiritual Protector H.B. Patrairch GREGORIUS III Laham, H.E. Grand Prior Dvwt. Peter Pokolm (EU), H.E. Grand Bailiff Prince zur Lippe (Germany), H.E. Grand Prior Hon. Consul General Dr. Wolfgang Breitenthaler (Slovakia), H.E. Grand Prior Duchess de Brissac (France), H.E. Vice-Hereditary Commander Stefan Henhapl (Austria), H.E. Hereditary Commander Thomas  Piontek (Germany), H.E. Commander Prince Radzivil (Poland), H.E. Bailiff elect Canon Jeremy Haselock (England and Wales), Secretary General Gareth Vaughan (England), and H.E. Grand Prior Dr. Simóka Tamás (Hungary).

 

 

The Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem as a noble, chivalric institution has got new strength and agreed on a common vision for a successful and bright future of the Order – to uphold chivalric ethics and values in serving the sick and the poor, always having in mind their ancestors as Knights of the Order in more than 900 years of the Order’s history – ATAVIS ET ARMIS !
